Congregation members worship along with the 70-voice Community Choir during the Christian Community Outreach service on Wednesday at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.
Several churches from Madison County gathered earlier this week to join as one voice in song at a community choral concert. The community church choir service featured church choirs from a variety of backgrounds, communities and denominations.
The service was held at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Medon. The community churches in the Big Black Creek community have joint services from time to time, said Billy King with the Big Black Creek Historical Association.
The service on Wednesday included a community choir that sang for the Smithsonian Exhibit the Big Black Creek Historical Association hosted last year, King said. The traveling exhibit, called “Journey Stories,” was on display in Mercer in the spring of 2011.
“There are about 70 members in this choir,” he said. “It is made up of the church choirs of the community.”
Some of the churches that participated include Mercer Baptist Church, Greater Mercer, Maple Springs Church, Denmark Missionary Baptist Church, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Clover Port Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Bemis and members from Woodland Baptist Church and Andrews Chapel.
The choir sang traditional church hymns, and members of the Jackson Plectral Society played alongside the choir.
David Perry is pastor of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. The guest speaker Wednesday night was Mark McSwain, former pastor of First Baptist Church Bemis, and Maple Springs Church, King said.
